✌️Two Seconds: Make the Call Before the Moment Does
As a referee, I usually have about two seconds to decide whether something is a foul or simply contact. There is no replay, no meeting and no time to overthink it.
Leadership works the same way more often than we realize. The email arrives, the employee walks in or the problem lands on your desk—and you have to decide whether to handle it, delegate it or let it wait.
1️⃣ Recognize What Is Actually Happening
The first decision is not what to do. It is recognizing what is truly in front of you before emotion, urgency or someone else’s reaction takes over.
Real-Life Example:
An employee sends a message saying, “We need to talk.” A reactive leader immediately assumes there is a major problem, while an effective leader pauses long enough to understand what the situation actually requires.
2️⃣ Decide Whether It Needs You
Not every issue deserves your immediate attention, and not every issue should be ignored. Strong leaders quickly separate what is urgent from what is simply loud.
Real-Life Example:
A customer complaint may need your involvement immediately. A routine scheduling issue may be better handled by someone else instead of becoming another task on your plate.
3️⃣ Forward the Play
Once you make the decision, move. Handle it, delegate it or schedule a specific time to return to it, but do not leave it sitting in the middle of the court.
Real-Life Example:
If you cannot address an issue until tomorrow, communicate that clearly: “I saw this, and I will get back to you by 10 a.m.” That one sentence creates more confidence than silence ever will.
Final Whistle
Most leaders do not struggle because they always make the wrong decision. They struggle because they hesitate long enough for the situation to make the decision for them.
You may not always make the perfect call. But your team needs to trust that you will recognize the moment, evaluate it and move the play forward.
Three Calls to Make Today
Recognize: Identify what actually needs your attention.
Evaluate: Separate real urgency from unnecessary noise.
Forward: Handle it, delegate it or schedule it.
