They Broke the Rules🍌 Leaders Should Pay Attention.

🍌They Broke the Rules Leaders Should Pay Attention.

3 leadership decisions that turned a struggling baseball team into a phenomenon.

Two weeks ago, I walked into Grayson Stadium in Savannah, GA to buy my daughter a T-shirt and left with three baseballs, a walk on the field, and a story I'll never forget. But what impressed me most wasn't the experience. It was realizing that everything the Savannah Bananas have become started with leaders willing to make decisions others wouldn't.

🍌 1. Stop Following the Playbook. Start Questioning It.

When Jesse and Emily Cole launched the Bananas, they struggled to sell tickets and nearly ran out of money. It wasn't working! Instead of copying traditional baseball teams, they made a bold decision: build the entire experience around what fans actually wanted, even if it meant breaking traditions.

Real-Life Example:
Think about the processes in your business that exist simply because "that's how we've always done it." Maybe it's your sales approach, how you run meetings, or how you serve customers. The best leaders aren't afraid to ask, "If we started over today, would we still do it this way?"

🍌 2. Make Decisions Based on Your Mission, Not Just the Money.

The Bananas eliminated traditional stadium advertising, walking away from significant sponsorship revenue because they believed it distracted from the fan experience. Their " Fans First " philosophy wasn't just a marketing slogan; it became the filter through which they made difficult business decisions.

Real-Life Example:
A leader faces a choice between increasing short-term revenue (like increase pricing) versus improving the customer experience (improve atmosphere, technology, etc.) The easy call might be to chase the money, but great leaders understand that building loyalty and trust can create greater long-term value. Your values mean very little until they cost you something.

🍌 3. Empower Your Team to Create the Experience.

You can't personally deliver every memorable moment, and Jesse Cole knows that. The Bananas have built a culture where team members understand the mission and can bring it to life without waiting for instructions from leadership. In addition, players are actually incentivized based on their social media followers. So fans can reach the players directly!

Real-Life Example:
When I visited Grayson Stadium, there wasn't a game, a crowd, or a camera crew. Yet an employee invited me onto the field, let me help collect baseballs, and thanked me with three Banana Balls. Nobody needed to hand that employee a script; the culture had already taught them how to make the call.

🏁 Final Whistle

The Savannah Bananas didn't become a phenomenon because they played baseball differently. They became one because their leaders had the courage to question tradition, make difficult decisions, and trust their people to deliver. As they head into this weekend's Banana Bowl championship, the biggest lesson isn't about baseball at all. It's about what becomes possible when leaders have the courage to change the game.
