🏀Feedback Hurts. Growth Hurts More Without It.

This week I did something that every leader and professional should do more often, I asked for feedback. After one of my conference presentations, I followed up with the organizers to hear their honest thoughts. It wasn’t about compliments, it was about learning what landed, what didn’t, and how I can keep improving.

Here are three ways to make sure your community or agency grow:

1️⃣Feedback Fuels Growth

Feedback is the mirror leaders often avoid, but it’s what allows us to see blind spots. When you actively seek input, you gain perspectives that you can’t find on your own. It’s not about judgment, but about continuous improvement.

👥 Real Life Example: An assisted living administrator started quarterly family council surveys. The feedback revealed dining frustrations that, once addressed, increased satisfaction scores by 20%.

2️⃣Outside Voices Matter

Sometimes the best feedback comes from those not directly in your organization. Mentors, consultants, or even peers in other markets can highlight patterns you’ve grown numb to. Their distance gives them clarity you might lack.

🏀 Example: A home care agency owner asked a peer in another state to mystery-shop their intake process. The result? They uncovered missed opportunities in follow-up that were costing referrals.

3️⃣ Feedback Builds Trust

When staff see that leadership not only accepts but asks for feedback, it sends a powerful message. It creates a culture where people feel heard, and that culture becomes your competitive advantage.

🏡 Example: A skilled nursing DON held monthly debriefs with her CNAs. Staff began sharing openly, leading to reduced turnover and stronger teamwork.

🏀 Final Whistle

Feedback isn’t a performance review, it’s a gift. When you seek it out, apply it, and show others you value it, you accelerate your own growth while building trust with those around you. Leaders who ask for feedback don’t just improve; they inspire improvement in everyone else.

✅ Today's Move

3 Actions Items ...

  1. Ask one staff member this week, “What’s one thing I could do better?”

  2. Schedule a quarterly peer-to-peer feedback exchange with another leader.

  3. Share one change you made because of feedback; model the behavior you want to see.

I'm cheering for you!

Here are some ways I can help you right now:

  1. 🎤Hire me to keynote your next event or company program.

  2. 📈Grow your skillset through one of my guided digital courses.

  3. 📕Read my book, Coming November 2025
